Fracture

Friday night Avery went on a walk with her cousins and her Papa.  They stopped at a park along the way and Avery had a little incident.  When they got back Avery was crying and holding her arm.  I picked her up and they told me what happened.  Avery was heading to a slide and had climbed up some stairs and was crossing a ramp.  Joel was following her and I'm assuming she turned around to see that he was coming.  Well she slipped and fell off of the ramp about four feet down to the ground and landed on her wrist bent backwards.

Her wrist was a little swollen and obviously in pain.  We put some ice on it and when we got home we wrapped it up.  It was not broken so we decided to wait a few days to see if the swelling would go down and so we could see just how serious it was.  We continued to ice it morning and night and kept it wrapped.  By Monday night it was still swollen and sore so we decided that we would take her in to her doctor the next morning.

At the doctors they asked us some questions on what what happened and what I had done to help it.  I was glad that they told me that waiting and monitoring it was a good thing to do.  The doctor looked/touched it for about 1 minute then he told me he would be surprised if it wasn't fractured and sent us over to the hospital to get an x-ray.  Our doctor's office is right next to the hospital so we just walked over to radiology.

We didn't end up having to wait long and they were very nice.  Avery was nervous to get the x-ray at first, but did really well and sat very still for them.  After the x-ray we had to wait.  The hospital would send over the x-rays then it just depended on how long my doctor took to examine them.  So we went to Chick-Fil-A for some lunch.  While we were finishing our lunch we got a call from the doctor's office letting me know that her arm was fractured in two places and that we would need to come in and they would put a splint on it.

I was able to get a very bad picture of the x-ray off of the computer screen.  The red arrow is pointing at the fracture.  The second fracture is hidden by the reflection of a light behind us.  They got us right in when we returned and Avery was again very good for them.  The doctor let me know that she would have to wear the splint all the time for two weeks only taking it off for baths.  Then for another two weeks after that she will have to wear it when she's running around.  So she'll have it for a month.

Avery did not like the splint at first and tried to take it off a few times, but she's used to it now.  She has been a bit more whiny because of the pain, but other than that she has been her normal self.
